Phyllis Freshman Marks (’41) first taught art and then became assistant to the art director at “Seventeen” magazine in New York City. She is retired now but still teaches art at Empire State College Academy for Learning in Retirement.

Obituaries

Louis C. Gerber Jr. (’41), 86, of Bradenton, FL, and formerly of Syracuse and Endwell, NY, died November 10, 2009. He will be remembered for his intelligence, love of family, bridge, tennis (and all sports) and a certain movie star. The career IBM man served as an inspiration to many by overcoming profound obstacles while maintaining his sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois; daughters, Suzanne and Diane; grandchildren, Rory, Max, and Anna; and siblings, Richard and Jane. [from Terri Gerber (’71)]

Virginia Stierwand Eells (’41), 85, of Delmar, died October 13, 2009. She worked as a case worker for the American Red Cross, first in Syracuse and then Albany.She is survived by her husband of 63 years, one son, two daughters, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, the Reverend George Stierwald.

Elaine Lockmyer Kaufmann (’41), 85, of Chevy Chase, MD, died August 22, 2009. She was a volunteer for the United Givers Fund and then Goodwill Industries, where for many years she helped organize their annual book sale. She is survived by her husband Karl, six children, and two grandchildren.

Hyman M. Miller (’41), 86, of Syracuse, died March 21, 2009. He was a member of the New York State Legislature Assembly for 18 years, beginning with the 1970 election. He represented the Republican members of the Assembly on many important committees. He was a veteran of WWII. He was active in many community organizations and was on several boards. He was one of the inaugural inductees into the Nottingham Wall of Fame in 2006. He was the founder and CEO of the Miller Agency, an independent general insurance business. He is survived by two sons, three daughters, and nine grandchildren.

Elaine Lockmyer Kaufmann ('41), 85, On August 22, 2009. Elaine was born April 2, 1924 in Syracuse, NY. She was the daughter of Abraham Lockmyer and Mollie Kuppermann. She was the beloved wife of the Karl J. Kaufmann, Jr.; devoted mother of Allyn Kaufmann and Bruce Dicoskey of Ashland, OR,Karl J. Kaufmann, III and Margrit Kaufmann of Ada, MI, K. Kaufmann of Palm Springs, CA, Abbe Kaufmann of Silver Spring, MD; grandmother of Mollie Kaufmann and Karl J. "Max" Kaufmann, IV, also of Ada, MI. Elaine believed in giving back to her community, first as a volunteer for the United Givers Fund and later, Goodwill Industries, where for many years she was one of the key organizers of the Annual Goodwill Book sale. Services will held 10 a.m., Monday, August 24 at Rode Shalom, Pittsburgh, PA. Interment West view Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Frederic J. Durkin (’41), of Fayetteville, died March 21, 2007. He worked in the transportation industry and was a member of Onondaga Golf and Country Club, Century Club, and Cavalry Club. He is survived by a daughter and three grandchildren.

Mary N. Huber (’41), 82, died January 15, 2007, in East Bloomfield, NY. She retired from Syracuse University Placement Center after 23 years. She is survived by four children.

Evans D. Dorman (’41), 82, of Royal Palm Beach, FL, died January 28, 2006. He was a graduate of the College of Applied Science, Syracuse University (1952). Evans served in the U.S. Army 8th Air Force during WWII. He was a retired division superintendent for U.S. Steel, Homestead Works, Homestead, PA. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Mary.

Pauline Rosenthal Share (’41), 82, died March 4, 2006, of complications due to a stroke. She was a proud wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Alan (’39); her children: Steven (’71), Susan (’72), Harlan (’76), Ira (‘78) and Hugh (’79).

Mary Lou Sarason Goldstein (’41), died November 24, 2006, in Teaneck, NJ. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Syracuse University.
