From Barb Crandall Lipe (’44), Barb Lonergan Coughlin (’45), Annie Dawson O’Malley (’45), and Pat Stellman Geoffery (’44): Our Clubhouse (written by Barb Crandall Lipe. On a recent, windy, snowy day in February, four very, old, very good friends got together for lunch and REMEMBERING good times, happy memories of high school days at Nottingham in the Forties during and after World War II! We had celebrated the End of the War in the Atlantic and later, in the Pacific, specifically, Japan… Our celebration, was first, a prayer in Church, and then a final celebration for us took place at EAGLE BAY and outside the TRADING POST, OUR NUMBER 1 Hangout!!! We shared so much in those years and the ones that followed, that we are today still special people because of those experiences! And grateful for them!!

Quentin Kopp '45, one of the 2008 Wall of Fame honorees, Chairman of the California High-Speed Rail Authority, announced that the November 4, 2008 bond vote was successful.  A 220-mph railroad is one step closer to construction, linking San Francisco and Sacramento to Los Angeles and San Diego.  This is a big deal for the USA, and brings us closer to the capability of existing high-speed railroads, such as the TGV in France and Shinkansen in Japan.

Carolyn Inglehart Coit (’45) wrote to let us know of the death July 30, 2008, of Nottingham alum Gregory M. Cheplin at age 80. He lived in New York City and Fire Island. Carolyn remembers him as “the smart kid in our class”. He served in the Navy and graduated from Yale and Yale Law School. He was a successful corporate lawyer in New York.

I remember one anecdote that would be of interest to you. He was celebrating a New Year’s Eve at a Newhouse apartment, and about 2:00am someone sat down at the piano and started playing the Nottingham Alma Mater. By the time it was finished about 12 people had moved to the piano singing lustily, ‘in our hearts forever’”.

Gerry Ryan (’45) of Bethesda, MD, wrote of the death of Dave Von Sothen (’44) in August 2007. Gerry and Dave were on the very successful track relay team in 1944. Jan Gardner Jiler (’45): Eighteen years ago I moved to a golf community in Boca Raton, FL, and much to my surprise our golf pro not only was brought up in Syracuse but he went to Nottingham. His name is Gordy Powell and we both enjoyed reading the Nottingham Connection. His father, Gordy Powell, went to school and played ball with my brother Mort Gardner at Nottingham.
