Donald "Don" L. Stanistreet ('51), 78, a
lifelong resident of the Syracuse area, passed away on Friday,
October 28, 2011. Don was the son of the late William and Ellen
(Barry) Stanistreet of Syracuse. After graduating from
Nottingham High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and
served during the Korean War. Following his enlistment, he
graduated from SUNY Albany, married his wife of 53 years, the
late Rita Maley, and began a 30-year career in education with
the Syracuse School District. During his extensive career, Don
taught social studies, coached football, was a principal at H.W.
Smith and Shea junior high schools, and retired as an assistant
to the deputy superintendent. Following his retirement, Don
volunteered as a disaster coordinator with the American Red
Cross, assisting in the local community and traveling to many
disaster locations throughout the United States. In his leisure
time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, hiking in the National
Parks and fishing trips with his brothers and brothers-in-law.
He was a proud supporter and loyal fan to his grandchildren's
many activities. His wife, Rita, predeceased Don last year.
Survivors include his son, Kevin (Danielle); his daughters,
Stephanie (Frank) Chiaravalloti, Susan Stanistreet and Donna
(Paul McCarthy) Stanistreet; grandsons, Anthony, Frank and
Nicholas; granddaughters, Julia and Ani; brothers, Robert, Paul
(Nancy) and John (Sharon); his sisters, Patricia Welch and Mary
Edick; as well as many nieces and nephews
Betty R. (Docter) Raines ('51) passed away August 30, 2011, after a long illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert B. Raines, to whom she was joyfully married for over 50 years, and her beloved brother, Stewart Docter. Betty was born on March 26, 1933, in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of Jess and Esther Docter. Betty was a graduate of Nottingham High School. Betty was a loving mother to Marsha Raines (Steven Gersz) and Lea (Alan) Wecht. Her beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Elaine, Saul, Larry and Jess, will miss her very much. Her nieces, nephews and many friends will remember her with love
Hannah
Ullman Dushay ('51), 77, of Fayetteville, died
Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at her residence. Hannah Ullman Dushay
was born in Syracuse, graduated from Nottingham HS in 1951 and
from Cornell University School of Home Economics in 1955. She
co-owned The Downstairs Attic in Manlius for 20 years. She and
her husband Seymour were two founding members of Congregation
Beth Sholom - Chevra Shas in DeWitt where she volunteered on
many committees and served as president of the Sisterhood. She
was an avid bridge player and was president of the board of
Contemporary Theatre of Syracuse. She was predeceased by her
husband of 48 years, Seymour L. Dushay (1929-2004). Survived by
her four children, Kevin, Mitchell, Robert and Naomi; her four
grandchildren, Lauren, Samuel, Stephanie and Corinne; and her
sister, Elaine Charles.
Raye Anita Schreyer Gilliamsen ('51), 76, passed away November 2, 2010 in Jacksonville, FL. She was born on March 3, 1934 to Raymond and Kathryne (Reeves) Schreyer.
Raye was a Navy wife, mother, sister and grandmother who spent her life caring for her family and others. She also was a dancer, world class swimmer, Girl Scout Leader and a clown. Raye participated in the Canadian National Swimming Exhibition in 1950. In 1951, she graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY and then the Jack Stanley School of Dance at Carnegie Hall in NYC in 1952. She traveled the United States and overseas with her husband of 55 plus years. Raye was truly a survivor who battled many serious health issues and won. She was an inspiration for many.
Raye is survived by her husband, Donald Gilliamsen, daughters; Kim (Neil) Fleming and Abby Gilliamsen of Jacksonville, and Lissa Nappier of Miami, FL; sisters, Kathryne Sullivan and Michele Dannon of NY; nephews; Charles Sullivan of NY, and Timothy Sullivan of CA; nieces, Kathryne Sullivan, Brandy Sullivan, and Heidi Arends of NY; and grandchildren, Paul and Katelyn Nappier of Miami, FL, Kathryne and Virginia Fleming.
John A. Meech Jr. (’51), 76, died December 25, 2009, in Syracuse. A Navy veteran, John worked for Westhill High School’s transportation department before retiring in 1995. He enjoyed performing and attending live theater, antique and collectible shows, and flea marketing. He is survived by a daughter and son, 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Peter Horstmann ('51), of Warren, VT, formerly of Sterling, died Aug. 19, 2009 in Worcester. He was a mechanical engineer and was a varsity athlete at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He had planned to lead a memorial service for his brother, Dick, who died July 5, 2009. The memorial is still scheduled for September 12. Diane
(Mason) Maynard ('51), 77, of
Syracuse, passed away Monday, April 26, 2010. Diane was born in Syracuse, the
daughter of Alta and George Mason. She was a graduate of
Nottingham High School and attended Syracuse University where
she met her husband, Bob. Diane was an active member of St.
Alban's Church where both she and Bob sang in the choir. Diane
was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She had a
strong determined spirit matched only by her big heart, caring
and generosity. She was predeceased by her daughter, Christine
Diane, on August 29, 1968. Diane is survived by her loving
husband of 54 years, Robert L. Maynard; son, Robert (Mary)
Maynard Jr.; daughter, Karen (Bill) Havens; grandchildren,
Sheila (Will) Shriver, Rebecca Maynard, Daniel Maynard, Matti
Havens, Oscar Havens and Timo Havens; great-grandchildren,
Benjamin, Gabriel and Nathaniel Shriver.
John
A. Meech Jr. ('51), 76, of Syracuse, died Friday,
December 25, 2009 at Loretto Health. A lifelong resident of
Syracuse, NY. Mr Meech was a graduate of Nottingham High School,
class of 1951 and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Meech worked
for Westhill High School's transportation department before
retiring in 1995. A communicant and choir member of the Delaware
Street Baptist Church, Mr. Meech enjoyed both performing and
attending live theater, antique and collectible shows, as well
as flea marketing across the northeast. He was predeceased in
1994 by his wife of 25 years, Margaret L. Meech and his mother,
Esther W. Meech in 1999. Surviving are a daughter, Catherine
Meech of Clearwater, FL; a daughter, Carol (Richard)
Christiansen of Liverpool, NY; a son, James Douglas (Rebecca)
Meech of Frederick, MD; 14 grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; and his canine companion, Rocky.
Capt. Richard K. Drake (’51), 74, of Auburn, died October 27, 2007. He served as a pilot in the US Air Force, flying F-100s in Japan. He graduated from Dartmouth College and the Wharton School of Business Administration. He owned and operated the Whispering Winds Motel in Skaneateles with his wife, Rita. He was a member of the Robert J. Hydon American Legion Post 239 in Skaneateles. He is survived by his wife, three children, two stepchildren, and 10 grandchildren.
James M. Keefe Jr. (’51), 75, died November 22, 2008, of lymphocytic leukemia. He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Mary B. Keefe (‘51), son James, and daughter Katherine. Jim retired after more than 33 years of government service and enjoyed over 20 years of retirement. Jim and Mary relocated from Rochester to Swarthmore, PA, in 2007 to be near family.
Marilyn Black (’51), died April 2, 2008, in Boynton Beach, FL. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, brother Gerald Levy of Palm Beach, and sister-in-law Lillian Black of Syracuse.
Irwin Klein (’51), 72, died January 25, 2006, in Fayetteville. Mr. Klein owned several Lazy-boy furniture galleries. He was a respected and successful real estate developer.
Barbara Pliskin Windheim (’51), 72, formerly of Fayetteville, died in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 22, 2006. She earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Syracuse University. She taught for over 30 years in the Jamesville-Dewitt school district, starting at Moses Dewitt Elementary school and moving to Jamesville-Dewitt Middle School when it opened, where she taught 6th grade social studies until her retirement. Early in her career, she also taught art classes. Mrs. Windheim studied and taught archaeology, and participated in numerous digs recovering Native American artifacts. Surviving are her three children and three grandchildren.
Neale F. Bogardus (’51), 74, of Camillus, died May 16, 2006, in Syracuse. A graduate of R.I.T. School of Printing, he was in the printing business for 40 years and was co-owner of Selco Graphics before his retirement in 1997. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joan L. (Lewis) Bogardus.
Donald James Pasho (’51), 74, died June 27, 2006, in Syracuse. He worked as a Quality Control Supervisor for NY Air Brake, Watertown, NY. He served with the US Navy during the Korean War. Don was active in sports since childhood. He played softball in the Syracuse City Rec League and in the over-50 men's league until last year. He will be taking his softball glove with him in the next life.
