Obituaries

Syracuse attorney Joseph D. Dosa ('66), 63, passed away unexpectedly on January 10, 2012. He was born in Oberkollnbach, Germany to Hungarian refugee parents. The family was sponsored to come to Syracuse by the Elmwood Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of Nottingham High School, Yale University, and the Syracuse University Law School. In 1995 he received a heart transplant, for which he and his family were always thankful. His father, Joseph Dosa, and infant daughter, Angel L. Dosa, predeceased him. He is survived by his mother, Marta L. Dosa; his wife of 21 years, Nienke P. Dosa; and daughters, Nadine, Jolene, and Martine.

John Douglas "Doug" Bloomer ('66) passed away in the early morning of July 20, 2011, as a consequence of throat cancer. Born November 4, 1948 to Janet and Grant Bloomer, Doug graduated from Nottingham High School in 1966. He then attended Valley Forge Military Academy for a year where he declined an appointment to West Point. Instead, he went to Monmouth College for two years; then graduated from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. He taught for a year in Poland, NY before returning to Syracuse in 1975 to join his father's business, Liverpool Home Center. There, he managed the custom frame shop as well as the hardware store. Doug started the Edgewood Gallery in 1989 as an offshoot of the Home Center. He hired Cheryl Chappell for the gallery, who, several years later, would become his life partner. Doug was a man with many passions. He loved sports. He was the quarterback of his high school varsity team and played basketball and tennis as an adult. He loved fishing, hunting, and canoeing in the wilderness of Canada and the Adirondacks. He loved wood-working, leather crafting, and creating his garden, which gave him great peace and beauty in his final days. He also loved the art world; the art work which feeds the soul and the artists themselves. But, it was truly all the people in Doug's life that he loved the most. His good friends and family were always first in his heart and brought him his greatest happiness. Doug is survived by his life partner, Cheryl Chappell; his children: Bethany (John) Taylor, Zachary (Ashley) Bloomer, and Jed Bloomer; their mother, Cindy Bloomer; his grandchildren, Amelia, Marley, and Elizabeth; and his brother, Stephen.

Gail Greiner Perry (’66), 61, of Round Rock, TX, died July 14, 2009, after a courageous fight against multiple illnesses. She was a special ed teacher and a volunteer in the CASA program for the protection of children. She enjoyed spending summers in Henderson Harbor and family vacations to Siesta Key, FL. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, John, a daughter and two sons, four grandchildren, her mother Amelia and brother Bob.

William V. Ferris ('66), 63, of DeWitt, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at University Hospital. Born in Oswego, NY, he lived his entire life in Syracuse. He was a graduate of Nottingham High School, Class of 1966. Known as "Fireball" to his friends, Mr. Ferris was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He was a loyal Syracuse University fan; football was his favorite sport. Mr. Ferris coached football his entire life, and his own brothers and son were fortunate to have him as a coach. He was predeceased by his father, George Ferris of Syracuse, and his brother, Charles Ferris of Boston, MA. Surviving are his wife, Marylyn; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy (Erikka) Ferris of Minneapolis, MN; his mother, Frances Ferris of Syracuse; brothers, George (Betty) Ferris of Santa Rosa, CA, John Ferris of Nashville, TN, and Bernard Ferris of Pittsburgh, PA; sisters, Marjorie (Kurt) Hildreth of Austin, TX, and Jennifer Carnes of Syracuse.

Margo Sachs Barbaria ('61)  passed away peacefully on October 15, 2009 at her home in New York City,  after a very long illness and courageous battle with cancer. Her husband Garrett and her sister Laurie were by her side.  From - Laurie Sachs ('66), 11 Arnon Street, Jerusalem, 94517, Israel

Mary Catherine Dixson Deal (’31) died in September 2008 at the age of 95. She was a high school English teacher and librarian. Married James Allen Deal who owned Deal Florist. She had two daughters, Susan Hunt Deal (‘66) and Margo Tracey Deal Erickson. Spent her life in service to her community. She liked to say her idea of heaven was a baked potato with a pound of butter!  Gail "Mimi" Greiner Perry ('66), 61, of Round Rock (Austin), Texas, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2009 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She fought courageously for 13 years against multiple illnesses with a beautiful smile and deep spirit that never wavered. After graduating from Nottingham High and the University of Texas, Gail entered the field of education as a special ed teacher and a volunteer in the CASA program for the protection of children. She devoted herself to the needs of children until her illness forced her retirement. Gail's favorite pleasures were summers at Henderson Harbor, NY, their family vacations to Siesta Key, FL, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, John; daughter, Jana Owens (Josh); sons, Jamie and Brian; grandchildren, Madison and Gavyn Owens, Emma and Katelyn Perry; mother, Amelia Greiner; brother, Bob Greiner (Debbie); and several nieces and nephews

Lorraine (Lori) Rathbun Lee (’66), 59, died October 1, 2007, in Oswego. She was a registered nurse and worked at Strong Memorial in Rochester and A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital in Auburn. She is survived by her husband, Gary Cranfield, two sons, two stepsons, three sisters and two brothers.

Suzanne Eberle Stokes (’66), 59, died August 28, 2007. She lived in California and dedicated her life to church ministry and prayer. She is survived by her husband, George, four children, one grandchild, her parents, and four siblings.

Jeffrey Lee Sussman (’66), 58, died June 28, 2006. He was a resident of Ormond Beach, Florida. He played college basketball at Long Island University before heading south to attend the University of Miami. He worked in the travel industry in Miami and Ormond Beach. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Pam Rill (’66). The Jewish Community Center of Syracuse has set up an athletic scholarship in Jeffrey’s name.
