Obituaries

Scott Louis Ruston ('67) died July 9, 2010, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 61. He was born and lived his early life in Syracuse, New York. He spent his adult life living in Salt Lake City after attending the University of Utah. When he was younger, Scott traveled frequently in the mountains and deserts of Utah, exploring and looking for unusual plants and animals. During the 1970s he started on a trip around the world, visiting Australia, New Zealand and Fiji but ended up spending over a year in Kathmandu, Nepal, building a hotel for Sherpa guides. Scott was enthusiastic about politics and had a great interest and understanding of physics, botany, physiology and other sciences. Scott also was an artist and tinkerer and loved reading science fiction. Since he was a child, Scott was a great lover of the natural world and had a keen interest in reptiles and amphibians. Another of his great loves was plants and gardening. He created many amazing and beautiful gardens that he built and tended to with great enthusiasm and care. Scott was very knowledgeable on the many subjects he knew and loved. Everyone who spent time with him learned fascinating facts about the world and often went with him with questions of all sorts. He inspired his friends about the wonders of this world and the joy of discovery. Scott's spirit survives in everyone who knew and learned from him, in the facts and ideas, both utilitarian and esoteric, of the knowledge of the unusual plants and animals he introduced them to, in the curiosity about the natural world that he instilled in children, in the memories of the good times his friends had hiking with him in the canyons or walking through the streets while he tried to teach the Latin names of the surrounding flora, in the engaging conversations he had, and most of all, in his friendship. He was predeceased by his mother, Dinny Ruston, and is survived by his father, Maurice Ruston of Virginia Beach, Virginia; his sister, Anna Dobbs of Dewitt, New York; his brothers, David Ruston of Syracuse, New York, and Paul Ruston of Kent, Washington; two nieces, Mallorie and Rachel Ruston; and a network of many devoted friends and family of varying ages, interests, accomplishments and paths, who all have in common their love for Scott. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Scott always ended his conversations with, "You be good."

Greeley William E. "Bill" Greeley ('67), 60, passed away on March 24, 2011, after a short illness. He was born to Edward M. and Adele Gibbs Greeley on April 30, 1950, in Syracuse. He graduated from Nottingham High School in 1967, attended Washington State University in Pullman, WA, and graduated with a degree in economics. He and Marilynn Merluzzi were wed in 1978. He is survived by his life partner, Marilynn; mother, Adele Gibbs Greeley; brother, John (Margo) Greeley of Marietta, NY; sister, Lynne (Don) Howe of Savannah, GA, as well as eight nieces and nephews and eight great-nieces and great-nephews. Bill's dad, Edward M. Greeley, passed away in June, 2005. As a boy and then a young man, Bill treasured the time he spent at the family summer home on Tully Lake. He loved to fly fish, camp and explore the mountains of Idaho with Marilynn by his side. A dog lover, he had two longtime canine companions during his life, "Jimmy" and then "Sophie". Bill became a contractor, building homes in central New York, as well as Idaho and California. He developed land with the goal of preserving nature. An avid forester, he and Marilynn planted more than 10,000 trees in Idaho. Bill had a heart of gold, a loving soul and a wonderful sense of humor. The first to break out in a hearty laugh, make a joke always making people feel at ease. At Bill's request, there will be no services.
