A big weekend is planned for the new sports complex. There will be a grand opening ceremony at 12:45pm on September 7, and a 6:45pm ceremony recognizing players from past championship football teams. Marty Henry (’69), who died June 22, will be honored at the ceremony. A reception for all football alumni will be held at 5:00pm and the opening game against CBA is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Obituaries

IversenNicholas Drake Iversen ('69), 59, passed away peacefully July 1, 2011 at his home in Mt. Kisco, NY, after a long battle with cancer. Nick grew up in Syracuse and was a graduate of Nottingham High School and Columbia University. He built a career doing what he loved - writing. He loved baseball, Hawaiian shirts, sunny afternoons in his hammock, making music with his friends and being with his family. He loved every minute of his life and those who knew him loved every minute they spent with him. He is predeceased by his father, Robert Iversen. Surviving are his wife, Anne of Mt. Kisco; his mother, Mary Iversen of Syracuse; his brother, Fritz of Talkeetna, Alaska; daughter Kristin with two grandchildren, Nico and Luka; and a son, Patrick, all of Brooklyn, NY.

Joanne Lavine Silverstein, Ph.D. ('69), 58, of Fayetteville and Erieville, New York, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at home after a long illness. She was born in Syracuse and resided there most of her life. After graduating from Nottingham High School and Syracuse University, Joanne worked as a product engineer at Genigraphics Corporation, then in software management at General Electric. She earned her Ph.D. in Information Transfer from the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, and became a professor at the school. She researched human intermediation in computerized systems and designed and taught digital libraries. Joanne was a lifelong member of Temple Society of Concord, and served for several years as the Chair of the Local Advisory Committee for the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation. She was predeceased by her parents, Vivian Rakov Lavine Wilkins and Nathan Lavine, and her parents-in-law, Shirley and Harry Silverstein. Joanne is survived by Paul, her husband of 35 years; sister, Laura Lavine (Donald Fitzgerald); brother, Gary Lavine (Mady Kudisch); brother-in-law, Elliot (Carol) Silverstein; several aunts, an uncle and many cousins. She is also survived by three nephews of whom she was extremely proud, Drew Lavine (Syracuse), Scott Silverstein (Atlanta), and Alan Silverstein (Manhattan).

PittsVanette D. Pitts ('69), 60, of Syracuse, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 24, 2011. Vanette was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, but lived her entire life in Syracuse, attending city schools. Vanette worked at Glomax Plastics for many years before retiring. Vanette was preceded in death by her parents, James and Dorothy Pitts; infant brother, James Willie; brother, Jarrell Pitts; and sister, Marvell Brumfield, who died May 15, 2011. Vanette is survived by her loving significant other, Richard C. Austin; son, Charles "DRC" Pitts; six grandchildren; stepmother, Shirley Pitts; two brothers, Jerry (Anita) Pitts and Jimmy (Annette) Pitts; sisters, Barbara (Rodney) Mattison and Donna Pitts; special goddaughter, Tershonna Pace; special best friend, Alisten Austin; special stepdaughter, Marian Austin; and a host of special nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Martin P. Henry (’69), 56, of Manlius, died June 22, 2007, of cancer. Marty was an officer with the Syracuse Police Department for 32 years. His wife of 27 years, Debbie, died in 2003. He is survived by his father, two sons, a brother, two sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

Maureen Henry Allard ('67) passed away from breast cancer in September 1989.  Her brother Marty Henry ('69) passed away in 2007.  Survivors are John Henry ('71), Jackie Henry Smith ('73) and Laurie Henry Ross ('79)
