From Robert J. Fashano, President & CEO of Alliance Advisory Group, Williamsville, NY: Suzanne (Marie McVay) Novelli (’70) is being honored on Sept. 24th, 2009, with one of Business First’s most coveted recognitions----A Women of Influence Award----for her outstanding work in the community over a long period of time. Suzanne has offered her leadership to many organizations, including Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, music organizations, Erie County libraries, Suburban Adult Services, Inc., and collaborative projects at local colleges, UB School of Engineering, and public schools. She has chaired numerous charitable events and coestablished a not-for-profit foundation. The twice chaired Guardian’s Girls Going Places entrepreneurship program for young girls. Suzanne is a financial advisor for Alliance Advisory Group.
Photographer Marjory Wilkins and her daughter Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell (’70), who formerly operated the Onondaga Dance Institute, were honored in March by the Syracuse Commission for Women.
Aisha Mitchell (’03) has been promoted to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York, after apprenticing with Ailey II for two years. She graduated in 2007 from Fordham University with a bachelor of fine arts. Aisha is the daughter of Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell (’70).
The Syracuse Commission for Women honored 18 women and one organization March 25th in honor of Women’s History Month, with a focus on the arts. Among the honorees were Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell (’70) (Builders of Communities award), and Nottingham senior Kelley Marie Mooney (Builders of Dreams Youth award).
The Alvin Ailey II Dance Theater, also known as Ailey II, performed Feb. 28th in Syracuse to a near-capacity audience at Syracuse University. Aisha Mitchell (’03), 22, is a performer with the troupe. Aisha was trained locally through her mother Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell’s (’70) Onondaga Dance Institute and Dance Centre North. In an interview, Aisha said she was really excited about coming home. She plans to audition for the larger Alvin Ailey company and to pursue acting in film and theater.
Nottingham grad Brandon Jones, 21, who is in his fourth semester at OCC, wants a graphic arts career. He started Hip-Hop in sixth grade and teaches Hip-Hop for Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell (’70). Wilkins-Mitchell directs the Onondaga Dance Institute and Kuumba Project Dancers. The ODI was the first to offer Hip-Hop classes locally.
Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell (’70) was featured in a two page article . She has moved her Onondaga Dance Institute to 4502 E. Genesee St., DeWitt where she will have more room to teach and coach young dancers. She has also taught dance at SUNY Oswego since 1992.
David G. Klim (’70), 53, of Dewitt, died July 13, 2006. Born with a hereditary disease which put him in a wheelchair, he had a distinguished career as a lawyer and an Onondaga County Family Court judge. He was also active on many nonprofit boards. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and two children. Judge Klim will be one of the honorees in 2007 for the Nottingham Wall of Fame.
