Energy expert Dan Reicher (’74), leads Google’s initiatives on energy and climate change. He is said to be a leading contender for the post of secretary of energy in the Obama administration. He was assistant secretary of energy in the Clinton administration.

Steven Galson (’74), acting surgeon general of the United States, spoke at Nottingham with his story of success and a message to students to take control of their health and their future. In an assembly of about 500 students, Galson answered questions from nine students on issues including marijuana and alcohol laws, preventing HIV/AIDS, the cost of healthier foods, and childhood obesity. He was in town for the third annual Nottingham Wall of Fame banquet.

Eight Nottingham alumni are scheduled to be honored at the third annual Wall of Fame induction ceremony on October 11. They include Dr. Fred Roberts (’35), Quentin Kopp (’48), Nancy Knapp McCarty (’50), J. Sehl Burns (’62), Ben Burtt (’66), Tony Trischka (’66), Dr. Steven Galson (’74), and Dr. Nancy Andrews (’76).

Dr. Steven Galson (’74) has been appointed acting US Surgeon General. The Surgeon General is the nation’s top doctor and health educator, overseeing operations of the 6,000-member commissioned corps of the US Public Health Service. Steven has spent his career in public health, most recently as director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the FDA, in charge of drug safety and the evaluation and approval of new drugs.

Obituaries

Laura A. Sanchis (’74), died on April 9, 2006 in Syracuse. She was a professor of computer science at Colgate University.
