Obituaries

Louise Goodrum ('80), 49, of New Bedford, MA, passed unexpectedly on Sunday, December 18, 2011. Born in 1962 in Stuttgart, Germany, Louise grew up primarily in the Syracuse, NY, area and settled on the coast of Massachusetts near family. She was a 1980 graduate of Nottingham High School, earned her bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and her master's degree in athletic training at the University of Illinois. Louise was the associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth. She served in her current position since 2007, after working for a year as interim athletic director at UMass Dartmouth. A 13-year member of the Corsair staff, she was initially hired in 1998 as head athletic trainer before being promoted to associate athletic director in 2004. She was previously employed as an athletic trainer at St. Lawrence University, Smith College and Anderson (SC) Junior College. Louise was also an active member of the UMass Dartmouth campus community, serving on several search committees, the campus Gender Equity Committee and the Corsair Hall of Fame Committee. She was a certified athletic trainer and had been a clinical instructor for interns in the athletic training program at Bridgewater State University. She also taught courses in emergency care, personal wellness and health. In addition to her work on campus, she served as treasurer for the eight-team Little East Conference, of which UMass Dartmouth is a member. Since 1996, she had worked for ESPN as the medical venue coordinator at the summer and winter X-Games and at the ESPN Great Outdoors Games. She also served as medical director at the CAN/AM ice hockey program in Lake Placid, NY. Louise loved nature and considered a walk on the beach with her dog to be a perfect moment. She enjoyed gardening, art, cooking, literature and music and took pleasure in sharing these hobbies with friends and family. Louise was predeceased by her mother, Marianne (Cruse) Goodrum, in 2000. Surviving are her father, William Goodrum, and his companion, Gisela Nordby of Syracuse, NY; brothers, Ralph Goodrum of Brattleboro, VT, Klaus Goodrum and his wife Angie, of Seattle, WA, and Philip Goodrum and his wife Amy, of Fabius, NY; nephews Erik, Parker, Nikolas and Graham; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins both in the U.S. and Germany

Katherine "Kathy" Linda Squair ('80) died April 17, 2011, after a long illness. Born in Syracuse on May 16, 1963, Kathy attended Manlius-Pebble Hill and graduated from Nottingham High School in 1980. Kathy received her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Buffalo in 1984 and returned to the area and worked for HSBC. She learned computer programming there and received her associate's in computer programming from Onondaga Community College in 1991, then later worked for Agway. She met Craig Riecke in 1990, and they were married in 1999 and resided in East Syracuse. Kathy was an avid fiction writer and wrote stories with heart, humor and an incredible economy of words. Faced with progressive multiple sclerosis, Kathy spent the last 12 years of her life quietly inspiring those around her. She is survived by her husband, Craig; her mother, Linda Squair of Syracuse; brother, Ed Squair of Burbank, CA; sister, Jen Kubeck of Syracuse; brother, Steven Squair of Harrisville, NY; sister, Susie Squair of Syracuse; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Cynthia "Cindy" Rene Leonard Sicherman ('80), 47, of 7756 Treadmill Circle, Liverpool, died Tuesday, June 29, at University Hospital after a long illness. Cindy was born July 24, 1962, to Paul and Frances Leonard. She attended Edward Smith, T. Aaron Levy and Nottingham High. She briefly attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated from LeMoyne College. Her places of employment included Key Bank, MONY, USA Datanet, Syracuse Community Health Center and the Urban League of Onondaga County. At the time of her death, Cindy was the finance director for Aurora of Central New York. She was a member of George Town Seventh-day Adventist Church in Grand Cayman; locally, Cindy attended Westvale Seventh-day Adventist Church in Syracuse. Cindy loved gardening, taking walks, cooking and spending time with her family. Cindy is survived by her children, Jahnae, Jonathan and Gabrielle Sicherman, all of Liverpool; her father, Paul Leonard of North Syracuse; her mother, Frances Leonard of Cicero; her sisters, Paula Leonard of Syracuse, Donna Cage of Cicero and Angela Piercy of Grand Cayman; her nephews, Marques Williams of Washington state and Stephen Williams, stationed in Afghanistan; her nieces, Patrice and Angela Cage of Cicero; and brothers-in-law, Leonard Cage of Cicero and Emerson Piercy of Grand Cayman.
