David Austin (‘82) wrote four of the ten articles which won the Portland Oregonian the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News. The articles dealt with the search for the Kim family, who were snowbound in the Siskiyou Mountains. James Kim was found dead of hypothermia after trying to seek help for his family, who were rescued after nine days. David said the thought of his own two children kept him motivated in reporting the story day after day.

Basketball coach Tony Smarrelli is retiring.  Smarelli won four sectional crowns at Nottingham.  His favorite team was the 1981-82 Nottingham team which won the state Class B title and set the school record for the most wins (26-1).  He said Ron Legette (‘82) was the best player he ever coached.

Feb. 1, 2006

Bernard (Bernie) Ment (’82) is running for a two-year village board trustee position in East Syracuse on both the Conservative Party slate, and the Citizens Party slate which is party that exists just in the village.  The election took place on March 21.  Bernie did not win.

Feb. 23, 2006

Bernard Ment (’82) is chairman of the DeWitt Conservative party.
